between miles
What we talk about, what we listen to, and everything that fills the quiet between miles.
Sunset run along the Charles River in Boston.
Some days it’s the sunrise. Some days it’s the playlist. Here’s what keeps us moving.
Tamara: “I love calling my friends and family during runs! It helps train your VO₂ (or so I hear) and is a nice way to block off time to catch up with people. In terms of music, I usually bop back and forth between angry, Rage-Against-the-Machine-esque songs and the classic hits from High School Musical 2.”
Kelly: “Lately I’ve been listening to Taylor’s new album The Life of a Showgirl on my runs. Today I had a podcast on about the NBA’s gambling scandal, and on especially busy work days, I’ll even listen to my cases on Speechify.”
Maclaine: “Doing less chatty runs these days as I train for a half marathon. When I’m running with friends right now, we tend to put on our music since we’re typically doing pretty long runs together. If we are talking, we’re talking about our running shoes, how we’re feeling about the race next weekend, running woes, or pretty views.
Typically I’m running on my own. Two types of runs for when I’m solo:
Bad b*tch taking over the world — need to feel like an athlete again and want to run fast — running tank and shorts.
APESHIT – The Carters
Red Ruby Da Sleeze – Nicki Minaj
Not Like Us – Kendrick LamarTake it all in, reset, chill — listen to the pitter-patter of my feet, look at the boats going down the river, baggy t-shirt and shorts, maybe shed a tear as I reflect on life, stop to take photos for Strava.
Olivia Dean – “Man I Need”
The Chicks – “Landslide”
Goo Goo Dolls – “Iris””
Julia: “I’ve been listening to Taylor Swift albums from start to end! It’s so nostalgic and moody. I kind of love going through entire discographies while I run because you learn so much about who an artist is and how they’ve evolved.
This is so consulting of me, but I also label all my playlists v1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc. I’m on 5.0 (Boston edition) right now, but I’ve really been going back to 2.0 and 3.0 recently. It’s almost like a time capsule of what I was going through in life, and it really takes me back. 2.0 has a ton of empowerment music like “Good as Hell” and “Thank U, Next,” and 3.0 was my Denver EDM phase — so RL Grime and Big Gigantic!”
Sarah: “I mean, mostly music lol, so usually not that interesting. But I also listened to an audiobook — Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu.”
